Virginia Walton

Virginia Margaret Walton passed away peacefully on August 3, 2026 in Sugar Land, Texas at the age of 100. She was born in Mercury, Texas on April 22, 1926, to parents Edna Cawyer and Okla Norman White. She had a happy childhood growing up on the farm in Mercury playing with her brother Charles and many cousins. Church at Mercury Church of Christ was the center of her family’s life.

Virginia graduated from Rochelle High School in 1944. After attending business school, she worked in Brownwood Texas doing secretarial work. There she met and married a handsome young soldier, Dale Douglas Baucum of Emerson, Arkansas. They soon moved to Fort Worth where she began her career with General Dynamics. She worked there as an executive secretary for 35 years with a few years off to begin a family.

Kathy Jo was born in 1953, and Douglas Dwain came along in 1954. Dale passed away in 1977, and she remained widowed for seven years. She met Dale (her second Dale!) Walton at church, and after a brief courtship they married in 1984. Dale’s children Vickie and Dale Jr became dear to her, and she loved welcoming them into her family.

Virginia and Dale enjoyed 17 wonderful years together. Their passion was involvement with the Primetimers group at Altamesa Church of Christ. They organized parties, acted in skits and had fun with their friends from church. Dale passed away in 2001, and Virginia remained single until her passing.

Virginia’s greatest loves were the church and her family. Even though she worked full time, she raised Kathy and Doug

to faithfully attend church and be actively involved with the youth group. She made it possible for them to get a Christian education at Oklahoma Christian College where they met their spouses.

Virginia never missed her children’s or grandchildren’s activities. She sat through many piano recitals, band performances, basketball games and track meets. Her favorite times were spent around the swimming pool. There she hosted parties and many family get-togethers. Her backyard was filled with beautiful flowers, and she enjoyed her patio until she moved to Granbury at age 95 where she continued to tend flowers on her balcony.

Virginia loved playing games - Bridge, 42 and later Mexican Train - and she was very competitive. “What’s the point in playing if you don’t want to win?” She had a keen wit and enjoyed making people laugh. She was very curious and interested in every detail of others’ lives. In later years, she became passionate about politics and would often ask strangers what party they voted for!

Virginia always had a song on her lips! She sang upon entering the kitchen to fix her treasured breakfast every morning. She was known for her fun songs at the Village Assisted Living - they made everyone smile. We will miss her voice and the joy that singing gave her.

Virginia is survived by her daughter Kathy Cobb (Galen), son Douglas Baucum (Janie), stepson Dale Walton Jr (Sherri), eight grandchildren - Bradley Cobb (Christina), Jeffrey Cobb (Gahn), Wesley Baucum (Heather), Charles Baucum (Kristen) Michael Baucum, Chryslyn Browning (Jeff), Ashley Terry (JP) Chace Walton and ten great grandchildren.
