Willie was born April 19, 1938 to Guadalupe and Eva Garza in Knox County, TX. During his childhood, he travelled with his family as a migrant worker from Texas to Colorado annually to work the fields. This experience of hard work taught him the values of strength, patience, tolerance and generosity. Willie led by this example every day.
Willie eventually moved to California where he married Yolanda Escorcia in San Francisco in 1970. Willie graduated Magna Cum Laude earning a degree in Education from Texas Wesleyan University. Willie was a well-respected and loved teacher at the Juvenile Detention Center in north Fort Worth until his retirement in 2010.
Willie was known for his love of education, politics, baseball, boxing and collecting books. Willie spent much of his free time reading. He saw books as a sacred transfer of knowledge from one person to another. Reading allowed him to see many perspectives. His love of books and education is something he shared with everyone.
Willie is survived by his wife, Yolanda of 50 years, daughters, with their families Margot and Jennifer and many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family. Willie was a loving husband, father grandfather and friend to everyone.
