Jeanne Petraglia, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026 at the home of her daughter in New York at the age of 95. Jeanne was born on December 12, 1930 to Frank and Lucille (Lauro) Perazzo in Brooklyn, NY.
Jeanne grew up in Sunnyside, Queens, alongside her parents and two younger brothers, Joseph and Frank. As the eldest sibling she beared a great deal of responsibility to help care for her two younger siblings. Jeanne attended Public School150 in Sunnyside and William Cullen Bryant HS.
Jeanne valued education deeply and especially loved languages. She earned her undergraduate degree in Romance Languages from Hunter College becoming fluent in French, Italian, and Latin. She later completed her Masters Degree from Queens College and went on to pursue a career in teaching.
Jeanne married Frank Petraglia, Jr. on June 30, 1956. Frank was a local boy who came to the house often with his guitar for “jam sessions” with her younger brother Frank. As the story goes Frank became a little more interested in Jeanne than the jam sessions.
Jeanne and Frank welcomed their only daughter, Lorraine and settled on Long Island.
Jeanne began her career in teaching first in the Valley Stream Union Free School District and then in the Connetquot Central School District. After pausing her career to raise her daughter, she returned to teaching. She spent the majority of her career teaching in the East Islip Union Free School District. Jeanne taught a variety of grade levels during her tenure at East Islip, spending the last years of her career teaching third grade. Jeanne retired after 24 years of teaching. After retirement Jeanne continued to support young educators. For several years she worked for Dowling College supervising student teachers, a role she found very rewarding.
Jeanne and Frank enjoyed living near the beautiful waters of Long Island. Jeanne enjoyed boating, golfing, and traveling as well as playing scrabble and other word games. As Jeanne and Frank began to plan for their retirement, they discovered the beauty of the Gulf Coast of Florida purchasing a retirement home on Longboat Key.
Jeanne and Frank enjoyed the snowbird life for many years. Jeanne spent the last 15 years as a full time Florida resident. Jeanne loved being a part of the Beach Harbor Club community and treasured the many friendships she made there.
Jeanne is survived by her daughter, Lorraine Porter and granddaughter, Lauren Porter who she adored. Jeanne is also survived by her brother Frank (Emily) Perazzo, sisterin-
law JoAnn Perazzo, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jeanne will be reunited in heaven with her husband Frank Petraglia, Jr., brother, Joseph Perazzo, and niece Diane Perazzo who all predeceased her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea on Longboat Key on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at 11 am. with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Memorial Garden.
