

She was born on November 29, 1925 in Westford, the daughter of Edward J. and Silva (Perry) Skellie. In 1944 she married Norman W. Groat in Westford. He predeceased her in 1981.
Vivian was employed for 35 years as a Chief Clerk for the US Department of Agriculture in Walton. After retirement from Dept of Ag in 1987, Vivian worked many years part time for Catskill Tractor & Chen-Del-O Credit Union both of Franklin.
She was a member and former Treasurer of the Franklin United Methodist Church, a lifetime Rotarian, and also enjoyed membership in the Washington Reading Club, and the Delaware County Senior Council.
Among her many hobbies, she enjoyed knitting afghans for many, was an avid reader, playing card games (rummy especially), filling out puzzle books, and reading any and all newspapers!
Vivian loved watching Wheel of Fortune and many knew not to phone her when it was on. Her favorite place to eat was Cracker Barrel. She was a worldly traveler in her younger years.
Vivian will always be remembered to her family and friends with her greeting of, “Howdy-Doody!”
She is survived by 2 sons, Norman (Doris) Groat of Walton, and Lincoln (Melinda) Groat of Bainbridge; 8 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; many nieces & nephews, and special friends near and far; and her roommate, Marion.
Vivian was the oldest living sibling of 2 brothers, Rod & Norman; and 3 sisters, Alma, Fran, and Maryann, who all predeceased her. She was also predeceased by a great grandson, Dustin Groat; and an infant great granddaughter, Chelsi Snell.
As per Vivian’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will take place in the spring at Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.
In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to be made to the Franklin Fire & EMS, PO Box 8, Franklin, NY 13775 and the Franklin Rotary Club, PO Box 178, Franklin.
