
Gene Jacob Chaney, 82, of Mt. Pleasant Retirement Village in Monroe, Ohio, where he resided for 9 years, passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at the Atrium Medical Center. He was born in Troy, Ohio, on January 14, 1929. After marrying Opal Rose in 1950, he moved to Middletown, where he worked 39 years as a metallurgical observer at Armco Steel Corporation, and retired in 1993. He loved sports, music, and enjoyed visiting the sick and shut-ins. Gene was a "people person". He enjoyed going to church, and was associated with the Nazarene Church of Middletown, Franklin, and Trenton. He coached baseball and played football in high school, and was awarded honorable mention as an All-Star at Troy High School, and later attended Bowling Green University in Ohio. He was preceded in death by his ex-spouse and friend, Opal Chaney; brothers Bill Chaney of Troy, Ohio, Forrest Chaney, Jr. of Troy, Ohio, and Ted Chaney of Iowa, and his sister Louise Motter of Louisville, KY. He is survived by his three children, Beth Chaney, Julie Chaney and Jean Chaney, all of Middletown. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 1st, one hour before the funeral at 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, and the funeral will be held at 2:00 PM at the Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home on Sutphin Ave. in Middletown, Ohio. Officiating will be the Rev. Michael Johnson and Rev. Virgil Applegate. The interment will be at the Woodside Cemetery immediately after the service.
