Jean Carolyn Niedringhaus, 87, passed away on Monday, October 6, 2014, due to complications from Alzheimer's disease at The Inn at Renaissance Village in Middletown, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Philip Wayne Niedringhaus, and her parents, Edwin Milton Swanson and Grace Carolyn Swanson.
Jean was born in Troy, NY. Her parents moved her to Long Island as a toddler when her father accepted a job at Con Edison in NYC. Jean graduated from Lynbrook High School in 1944 and soon afterwards began taking classes in dress and costume design at The McDowell Designing and Dressmaking School in NYC. She worked for several years at a law firm in Manhattan as a secretary. While enjoying time at the oceanfront beaches at Jones Beach State Park, she met her future husband, Philip Wayne Niedringhaus of Philadelphia.
Jean was a homemaker. She always had the family dinner ready when Phil arrived home from work at 5 PM. She sewed for many years, delighting in making clothes for all occasions for her daughters. In later years, she took up quilting. Jean also loved to read, and was a regular patron of the Bay Shore/ Brightwaters Public library.
Jean was an active member of Bay Shore Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star – State of New York Lodge for over fifty years. She was a sixty-year member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Bay Shore, N.Y. serving on the alter guild caring for the alter linens and communion preparations. Jean was also a member of the AY chapter of the International Chapter P.E.O sisterhood in Babylon, NY.
Jean was a devoted daughter, mother and wife, putting her family above self.
Jean is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Caryn and Andy Davis, daughter and son-in-law Joyce and David Wise, granddaughter Lauren Wise, grandchildren Karli, Kyle and Katie Keator and great grandchild, Phoenix Kitchen.
Interment will be at the Dayton National Cemetery, West Third Street, Dayton, OH on Friday, Oct. 10, 2014 at 1:00 PM. There will be short visitation from 11:30 to 12:15 PM at the Breitenbach McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home, 517 South Sutphin Street, Middletown, OH. The procession to the cemetery will leave at 12:20 PM. Memorials may be made to the hospice of the donor's choice.
