Thomas Patrick Hammelrath, age 75, of Longboat Key, FL and Springboro, OH, passed away peacefully Saturday, October 4, surrounded by his family after a long and courageous journey with Parkinson’s Disease. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, friend, and co-worker to so many. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jane, children, Kara (Sean Carpen) of Chicago, IL, and Kristin (Jack Blake) of New York, NY; grandchildren Jackson, Luella, and Jack; Mother Ann, brothers Tim and Mark (Mary); sister-in-law Pam (David Aukerman), and extended family and friends who loved him dearly.
Born on March 29, 1950, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Anna K. Hammelrath and the late William Thomas Hammelrath, Tom was a proud graduate of LaSalle High School and University of Dayton.
Tom spent his career at Danis Building Construction Company starting as a project manager and then proudly serving as president for 25 years, shaping many of the buildings you see in Dayton today. He hung up his hard hat after 41 years of service, but true to form, Tom could not resist one last encore—lending his time to the board for another decade, ensuring the foundations he had laid endured long after he traded his office for a pool raft.
Although Tom was a successful and dedicated professional, he measured success not in his career triumphs, but in the time he spent with his family. He never missed a dance recital, school event, or family vacation to Sarasota, FL. After retirement, Tom could be found on the sidelines of his grandkids’ games, on a raft in the backyard pool, on the beach of Longboat Key, FL, or at a Cincinnati Bengals game.
Known as Slicky by his close friends and grandchildren, Tom was never shy about landing a good one-liner, and his silent cackle was infectious. His stories and humor will live on in his children and grandchildren who will carry his Slicky-isms forward, one punchline at a time.
A Mass to celebrate Tom’s life will be held on Friday, October 10 at 10:30am at Saint Henry Catholic Church, 6696 N. Springboro Pike, Dayton, Ohio, followed immediately by a burial at Calvary Cemetery. Please join the family to toast Tom at Sycamore Creek Country Club, Springboro from 12:30-3:30pm.
A Tom Hammelrath Legacy Fund has been created within the Danis Foundation to honor Tom and support the co-workers he respected and cherished. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the “Danis Foundation” to provide college scholarships for the families of Danis employees. Please send checks to the Danis Foundation, attn Angie Booth-Peters, 3233 Newmark Dr, Miamisburg, Ohio 45342.
