

We come together today to honor the life of Daw Kyin Hla, who was born to U Sein and Daw Hlaing on the full moon day of Pyatho in the Myanmar calendar year of 1290, which corresponds to December 25, 1928. She passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her children and grandchildren on July 30th, 2025, at the remarkable age of 97. Her journey was marked by love, resilience, and generosity.
Kyin Hla grew up in Twante Township, Yangon Region, Myanmar, in a caring Burmese-Chinese family. The challenges she faced during World War II played a significant role in shaping her resilience and instilling hope despite setbacks. In 1947, Kyin Hla wed her husband, U Kaung, also known as Yap Bok Choon. Together, they nurtured a wonderful family of six sons and four daughters. As the family's matriarch, she
dedicated herself to creating a joyful and supportive home, instilling in her children the values of love and perseverance. In 1995, she relocated to Fremont, California, where she continued to cultivate a warm and loving atmosphere for her family and those in her community.
Kyin Hla leaves a lasting legacy of love and strength. Her steadfast support had a profound impact on her children's lives, instilling in them values of resilience and compassion. As a grandmother, she was celebrated for her nurturing nature, often showing her affection with the cherished phrase, “Have you eaten?” This simple question reflected her deep care and dedication to her family, ensuring that her loving spirit will be treasured and remembered for years to come.
As we bid farewell to Kyin Hla, let us celebrate her life, which was rich in love and dedication. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.
