Dinh Thị Lành - Our Mother
Mợ was born and raised during the final stages of World War II (she was born in 1944). When she was eight years old, her grandparents, mother and siblings were all killed by a bomb during an air strike. That day, Mợ and a younger sibling ran down to the bomb shelter. She got down in time; her younger sibling did not, and so died from exploding bomb fragments. Mợ’s father, like her, luckily escaped death, but could not evade the deep sorrow of suddenly losing so many loved ones. She was the last surviving child of Mr. Dinh Văn Huệ and Ms. Nguyen Thị Tuất.
Mợ's life has seen many ups and downs, and she became a widow raising a child at a very young age. After that, she came to our family when we were still very young, and took on the role of a gentle mother and respectful daughter-in-law, which was a blessing and honor for our family.
She was a pious woman. Every year, during the Lenten season, she would remind us to "prepare to fast, repent, go to confession," and she would remind us on other holy days as well.
Mợ’s name, Lành, was truly fitting and a perfect reflection of her temperament and personality. She was always compassionate and kind, spoke ever so softly and never raised her voice at or upset anyone. Throughout her life, she made many personal sacrifices in order to take care of her husband and children, from the new shirts she sewed for us to welcome the new year when we were little, to the meals she lovingly cooked every week for the whole family. Her grandchildren brought her great joy. She loved to teach them, and delighted in hearing their laughter.
Since the day of our father's passing, Mợ has wept solitary and silent tears. Bereft of her companion of five decades, her health weakened, day by day. She suffered from her illness and from the knowledge that she would not be with us much longer. God listened to our prayers by taking away her pain and bringing her to Heaven. Mợ's passing is an immense loss for us, but a great gain for God's kingdom, which now has a devoted new angel.
Mợ, we now bow, and bid farewell to you, with deep gratitude for all that you have done for our father, for us, and for our families. We hope you’re soon reunited with Cậu, our brother Bình and your loved ones in heaven.
