Lima Marguerite Campbell of Fremont, California passed away peacefully at her son’s home on June 14, 2026, at the age of 99. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, friend, artist and teacher. She will be deeply missed by the many people who knew her. She was born and raised in the small mill town of Howland Maine. In her early years she excelled in school, sports, art, played the piano and worked part time at the mill during summer vacation.
In the late 1940’s, she attended Husson Business College in Bangor, Maine. While there she played on the girls' basketball team where she earned the title of “the Scapper”. During this time, she met future husband Freddie, an army veteran of the second world war and a student at Husson.
They married in 1953 with their two-year-old son headed west for Freddie’s new job at Orangeburg Pipe company in California. Eventually in 1957 they were able to purchase their own home in the Mission San Jose area, which later became part of Fremont. Lima then focused on managing the household and raising two sons. She worked part time for a number of years at the Butter Crust Bakery all the while continuing with her artwork. In the mid 60’s Lima and Freddie purchased a lot in the Russian River area and built a cabin which became a pleasurable and much visited get away spot.
When the boys got older, she returned to college and completed her art degree and teaching credentials at Cal State Hayward. She then had a long career as an elementary school teacher for the Hayward Unified School District. As a classroom teacher she always provided art instruction to her students along with all the other subjects. After her retirement, she continued teaching art part time to elementary students at Chadbourne Elementary in Fremont. She continued with this until the age of 91. Her remaining years were spent enjoying her family, friends, neighbors, pets, and home.
She is survived by son Mike and wife Melanie, son Phil and wife Janet and grandsons Spencer, Cody and Tyler.
