Marcus Raposas Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on September 3, 2026, at the age of 101. His long and remarkable life was a testament to love, family, hard work, and quiet devotion.
Marcus was born on April 25, 1925, in Koloa, Kauai, to Teodoro and Maria Raposas. As a child, he lived with his family in a simple shack near the Kekaha shoreline and was nourished by fish caught from the sea. As a young man, he lived in Wailua, Haleiwa, and Kahuku, Oahu, and attended Kahuku H.S. One fateful day, on December 7, 1941 as he was returning to Honolulu after working in the pineapple fields of Lanai, he witnessed the confusion and terror in the sky which was the Pearl Harbor attack. At age 18, he was drafted into WWII service. It was in Waimanalo that he met the love of his life, Mameliana. The two were married and began raising their family there before moving to San Francisco, California in 1954, where Marcus embarked on a career as a merchant seaman and ship engineer. For decades, Marcus traveled the open seas to exotic ports throughout the Orient.
The Raposas family eventually settled in San Jose, California, where their home became a gathering place - a center of love and ohana.
Marcus was a devoted and loving husband to Mameliana for 61 years, until her passing in 2005. Their bond was the foundation of the family he built and the values he lived by.
An avid and skilled free-diving spearfisher and surf caster in his younger years, Marcus never lost his love of the water. In his later years, he and Mameliana enjoyed dropping a line off the pier together, fishing for perch and striper.
He was also a gifted painter, and his portraits, landscapes, and seascapes —are a timeless and cherished reflection of the life he lived and the people and places he loved.
Marcus was a quiet and peaceful man, and it was through his steady virtue, strong work ethic, and unwavering commitment to his family that his character spoke loudest. He will forever be remembered and revered as the pillar of his family.
Marcus is survived by his children, Maria Bonds, Marcus Raposas Jr.,Cynthia Lopez, Lewellyn Raposas, and Theodore Raposas. He was preceded in death by his son, Ross Michael Raposas. He also leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, and 2 great, great- great- grandchildren.
