Ronald "Ron" Alan Whitmill, age 54, passed away suddenly on May 22, 2026, in Fremont, California. He leaves behind a legacy defined by his fierce devotion to his family, his lifelong passion for volleyball, and the countless lives he impacted as a father, mentor, and coach.
Ron was born on September 20, 1971, in Taipei, Taiwan, to Floyd and Betty Whitmill. He was raised in San Jose, California, where he attended Piedmont Hills High School before continuing his education at De Anza College in Cupertino.
In May 1992, Ron welcomed his first child, Ronald Jr., beginning a lifelong journey of fatherhood that would become the cornerstone of his identity.
On August 18, 2001, Ron married the love of his life, Heidi, and their family grew to include their daughters, Vanessa and Danielle. Together, Ron and Heidi built a beautiful life centered on family, community, and mutual support. While Ron spent 10 successful years at Ocean Electronics, his true calling was always at home. He made the deliberate choice to step away from the corporate world to become a full-time, stay-at-home dad, dedicating his days entirely to raising his children and supporting his family.
Ron’s devotion to Ronald Jr., Vanessa, and Danielle was boundless. He was a doting father and a constant, steady presence in their lives, actively shaping their worlds not just as a parent, but as a mentor. He celebrated every milestone, big and small, and his family always knew they were his greatest priority and proudest achievement.
Volleyball was Ron’s lifelong passion, a sport he played and coached for over 40 years. As a player, he was a fierce competitor on any surface—indoor, grass, and beach—both men’s and co-ed, regularly winning tournaments. Players always preferred to play with him than against him. He was deeply proud of his Chinese heritage, and competed in 9-man volleyball, racking up multiple championships at the North American Chinese Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
He poured that same knowledge, energy, and heart into coaching at City Beach Volleyball Club, Vision Volleyball Club, Menlo-Atherton High School, and Valley Christian High School. He led his high school teams to countless victories, including multiple CCS and State titles. His club teams qualified for Nationals every season, often in the Open division, and became known as the coach that everyone wanted to play for. Yet, Ron's success was never measured solely by wins and losses; it was measured by building lasting relationships and cultivating an environment where each player felt seen, valued, and inspired. His presence in the gym was legendary, often accompanied by his beloved German Shepherds—Bruno, Axel, and Tilly—who were regular, welcomed fixtures at his practices and his lifelong companions.
Beyond the court, Ron was a man who found joy in creating a beautiful, welcoming home for his loved ones. At home, he found peace tending to his vegetable garden, his fruit tree orchard, and his Japanese Maple tree grove. Ron was also an extraordinary cook and a true grill and smoke master, who loved nothing more than gathering his family and friends around the table to share a great meal and make lasting memories. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Lions and Detroit Pistons, never wavering in his team loyalty, and thoroughly enjoyed watching the UFC and meeting up with friends for a round of golf.
Ron’s greatest pride will always be his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 25 years, Heidi; his son, Ronald Jr.; and his daughters, Vanessa and Danielle. He is also survived by his mother, Betty, and her partner James Lee, and his sister, Barbara Kozak. He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd.
