Steve was a really great guy!  A pleasure to work with and a most competent individual.   We served together in Civil Air Patrol for over twenty years.  For five years in the late 2000's we shared an office.  His vast knowledge of Civil Air Patrol was a significant help to me as I served as Director of Finance and later as the Inspector General for the western portion of the nation.  

He will not be forgotten!

Steve was a very dedicated Reserve for the Sheriffs Office. When i ever needed a question answered, or needed help Steve was always there to lend a hand. I have very fond memories working details with him and he will be greatly missed.

When I became the Reserve Coordinator in 2006, I had several new challenges in front me. In order to meet those challenges, I needed and received genuine input from the Reserve Command staff.   Steve Updike held the rank of Reserve Lieutenant at that time and was eager to to give input.  Steve assisted me with meeting those challenges for both the department and the citizens it served.  Steve's dedication to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office will be missed as he was one of those people you could always depend on to help out with last minute details or events.

When I joined the Sheriff's Reserve in December 1984, I knew I had found a new home with some very quality individuals, including Steve Updike. I liked him right away; I enjoyed talking with him about electronics and computers. I recall working with him at a pay job at Blackberry Farms in Cupertino about 10 years ago; when I went to school picnics at Blackberry Farms as a child I never could have imagined I would one day be there wearing the uniform of the Sheriff's Office. Working with Steve that day made the occasion even more enjoyable.

Steve was a very dedicated reserve to our department and helped make our reserve unit a better and a more professional place to work.  You will be missed Steve.

Steve Updike served the residents of Santa Clara County with a high level of commitment and professionalism.  His personnel file is full of commendations from people and organizations that he served in his role as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff.  His legacy is one of giving, sharing and putting others first.
