

Mr. Yew Teng Hsu was born in March 10, 1926 to Mr. Te-Chau Hsu and Mrs. Tsou Lau in Labis, Johor Bahru Malaysia, His father Te-Chau came to Malaysia from De-Hwa, Fujian, China with his father's uncle to explore business opportunities. They opened a bakery. As the eldest son of ten children, he was fond by his parents and respected by his younger brothers and sisters.
His father took him back to Fujian, China to attend Jinjiang High School when he was 14.
In September, 1944, he and many his classmates responded to a calling of Chinese Government to defend the country from foreign invasion. As the troop moved around to different provinces, he was able to pick up many local dialects with helps from many local citizens, this ended with the end of the Second World War. Papa learned how to live with limited means through tough times; he also learned local customs and cultures. In mid1947, papa went to Taiwan, he became a fine consultant to settle distributes among many people, especially he cared for the weak and those who could not speak Mandarin. He was full of compassion, his ability to bridge the gap between the immigrants and Taiwanese proved to be a blessing to many.
He was married to Lihwa Huang in February 2nd, 1949, Tainan, Taiwan. Later they built their family of four lovely and fine children in Kaohsiung, Joe, Lifang, Li-Li and James. He had seven grandchildren, Roger, Trisun, Hanna, Jonathan, Michael, Yi-Zhe, Yi-Pong, He also had four great grandchildren with another great grandchild on the way. He felt very happy and blessed when he visited and played with his grandchildren, English Names are Chain-Jia, Xian-Ning, Lucas, Alex.
Mr. Hsu was a man of visions, he was creative and he was brave. He ran for senator in Kaohsiung several times because he was willing to serve people and speak for their needs. He befriended people who drove tricycles for a living. He helped a doctor who was falsely accused of malpractice. He hated people stealing when in disaster situations and he volunteered to maintain the order when fire broke out. He disliked officials who obtain personal gains through public office, thus caused him to be not a favorite among many professional politicians. He taught us to respect seniors, strive and study hard, work diligently and be a resource to others.
Our late mother Hsu Huang Lihwa passed away in August 29, 1980. In 1987, papa remarried Ms Kwan Shin Hing from Hong Kong.
Yew Teng got baptized in April 30, 1989 and become a Christian. His love for the Lord is shown in his prayers, he likes to hold our hands, read the Lord’s Prayer and together pray for friends and family.
My late father is a kind, respectful person, true to his words. From 1994, he started editing the Hsu ancestry directory. In 1997 the Hsu Ancestry Directory finally completed and published.
From 1988-1997, my late father did a great amount of travelling, from Malaysia to Hong Kong, from Taiwan to US and Canada, visiting friends and family. Seeing all his family, especially his grandchildren, brings him tremendous joy. It was also during this period, papa get to know brother Shi-Jung Chen, brother Jun-Guo Wang and pastor Chris Chen from church. Papa’s adventurous spirit got him to learn how to take public transportation from Milpitas to San Francisco. Papa also brought Jonathan and his grand ma along to these adventure trips.
In 1997, in California papa fell down, he was in hospital and rehab for over 10 days. His strong spirit pushed him to learn to walk step-by-step. Soon after, our eldest brother Guang Ming took papa back to Taiwan to continue treatments. In 2002, papa was able to walk again and come back to California to attend Jonathan’s junior high graduation.
In August 2002, papa was not feeling well and was later diagnosed with degenerating spine.
In 2005, papa went back to Taiwan to attend the wedding of his eldest grandson, Roger. He had the opportunity to see many old friends and relatives and also get to see his first great-grand-daughter, Chain-Jia Huang.
In July 2006, Papa had another stroke, this time one of his eyes got affected, yet his appetite is still very good. Papa never complains, yet he always appreciate time spend with family members, especially ones who come from overseas. Papa often prays with family to thank the Lord for all his blessings.
In 2012, papa got pneumonia, and his body gets weaker by the day, he can only take liquid foods prepared by the convalescent hospital.
Feb 11, 2013, papa can only take 40% of the daily food quantity. Morning of Feb 12, he was breathing hard, and finally went into a coma. Around 3 to 4pm the same day, Pastor from the hospice and Elder from CCIC church came to pray, sing and read Psalm 23 with papa. By 8pm, the nurses arranged for a special room for papa, so that family member can be beside papa’s bedside, sang, prayed, took pictures, spoke to family members overseas and kept papa company until the end on Feb 13, 2013.
