Anita Sue Lieser Roberts was born on October 7, 1965 to Rev. Charles Otis Lieser and Rebecca Louise Cummings Lieser in Louisville, KY. The middle of three children in a Lutheran pastor’s family, she loved family camping vacations and playing board games.
She graduated salutatorian from Buckeye Center High School, which earned her a full scholarship to North Central Technical College where she earned an Associate’s degree in Applied Business. She then began working as a secretary at Jeromesville Methodist Church in 1988 when she met Thomas Charles Roberts. They married on September 30, 1989 while he was on his seminary internship studying to become a Lutheran pastor.
Anita and Tom were blessed with two children, Kathryn (Kathy) Suzannah Roberts and Rachel Elizabeth Roberts. Anita was a wonderful wife and mother. She chose to be a stay-at-home mom so she could focus on raising her girls, supporting her husband, and volunteering. She volunteered in many capacities including as a Girl Scout leader, at church, and in the schools.
Anita had a true servant’s heart, always selflessly caring for others over herself. People always loved seeing her beautiful dimpled smile, which she shared with so many.
Anita was also the caregiver for her husband, Tom, when he battled brain cancer twice. On July 7, 2007, Tom went to be with their Savior in Heaven. After Tom passed away, Anita rose to the challenge of raising their two daughters by herself. She went back to school and earned her Professional Medical Coder Certificate from the American Association of Professional Coders in February 2013. She then worked as a professional medical coder for Lima Memorial Hospital in Lima, OH, and Parkview Physicians Group in Fort Wayne, IN, for the rest of her career. Her coworkers admired her work ethic and integrity.
On January 7, 2012, Anita married Richard Eugene Roberts. In 2019, they achieved their dream of moving to Brown Lake in Steuben County, Indiana. Anita loved living at the lake, where she could watch the birds she fed, kayak on the lake, spend time in nature, ride her bike, pick up litter along the road on her walks, and beautify the flower beds, as she did in every house in which she lived. Anita had a knack for making everything more beautiful, whether it was tending flower beds, sewing curtains for her daughter’s new house, scrapbooking memories from photos she took, cooking for a gathering, cross-stitching, or singing with her beautiful soprano voice.
Anita was an avid reader and bargain hunter. She loved going to garage sales and thoughtfully kept a list of items that her daughters could use in case she ran into them at garage sales. She loved kids and often volunteered in the children’s ministry at church. She was grateful to God that she met three little boys at the local ice cream shop who would become the adopted grandchildren she always wanted. She and Richard loved spending time with those boys.
Kathy and Rachel will always cherish the trips that Anita and Rachel made to Kathy’s home in Brown County where they would spend long weekends hiking, playing board games, picnicking, and making good food. Anita was truly a light in the world, making everything and everyone around her brighter and warmer.
Anita was a strong woman. She beat breast cancer twice. In her third battle with it, she fought with all her strength and didn’t let it detract from her living life to the fullest. She would like to see a world where no one else has to battle cancer. For that reason, she requested that memorial contributions be made to Parkview Cancer Center.
Anita’s love for others and for life were rooted in her love for Jesus. She always had the contemporary Christian radio station playing in her home office, and she would sing along in the car. Her favorite song is Homesick for Heaven by Phil Wickham. Some of Anita’s last words were, “I want to go home to Jesus.” Her family has no doubt that is where she is, and they can’t wait to spend eternity with her there.
