Gary L. Hershberger, 61, of Snow Lake, Fremont, Indiana, passed away, Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at South Baldwin Hospital, Foley, Alabama. Mr. Hershberger was born on June 8, 1952 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the son of Merritt & Geraldine (Heiser) Hershberger, they preceded him in death. Gary was a graduate of Ft. Wayne North Side High School. He was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Orland American Legion Post # 423, and was a former member of the Fremont Moose Lodge. Gary was the owner of the Auburn Town Tavern, Auburn, Indiana for the last thirty-one years, and also was co-owner of Shorty’s Steakhouse in Garrett, Indiana the past seven years. Gary enjoyed traveling, spending time on the lake with his children, he enjoyed making new friends, doing puzzle games on his computer, and was a great sports fan, and enjoyed following professionals sports teams such as the Indianapolis Colts and the Boston Celtics, and he especially was a Larry Bird fan, and was a Chicago Cubs fan. He also followed the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team, and the Indiana University basketball team. He is survived by his two children, Cody Hershberger and Courtney Hershberger, at home, Snow Lake, Fremont, IN., two sisters, Fawn & Terry Hamrick of Ft. Wayne, IN., and Darlene & Mike Tassler of Dallas, TX., and two brothers, Ronnie & Cathy Hershberger of Ft. Wayne, IN., and Greg Hershberger of Decatur, IN. Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 PM Sunday July 28, 2013 at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, IN. A Celebration of Life will follow the calling hours at 3 PM Sunday July 28, 2013 at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, IN., with Rev. Darin Hendrey officiating, Military Honors will conducted by members of the Orland American Legion Post # 423.
