Hershel D. Smith, Sr., 86, of 2660 E 700 N, Fremont, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Oct 25, 2018. He died at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 24, 1932 in Scott Township, son of the late Orville and Reva Leland Smith of Fremont. Hershel is survived by his wife Carolyn Neutz Smith whom he married on Nov 17th, 1951; he is also survived by a daughter Cathy (Tim) Rothrock of Nashville, Indiana; a son, Carl (Chris) Smith of Weed, California; a daughter Crystal (John) Jones of Clare, Michigan; a daughter Cheryl (Max) Delacruz of Pleasant Lake, Indiana; and a son, Chip (Hershel Smith Jr) and wife Josie of Quincy Michigan. Hershel Sr. had 9 grandchildren: Pamela (Tony) Ringler; Christopher (Pam Voelske) Book; Jason (Jennifer) Book; Jeffrey Book; Gina Smith, (Kalin) Jenkins; Jenny (Mick) Leggitt; Brian Oliver; Colleen Fair; and Hunter Smith. He had 5 great grandchildren: Cole Book, Maya Oliver, Laine Jenkins, Maddison Oliver, Maleeha Oliver. And many step grandchildren and great grandchildren. Hershel has one living sister, Ina Mae Stroh, of Ocala, Florida and many nieces and nephews. Hershel Smith Sr. was preceeded in death by 5 brothers: Emmett, Don, Clifton (Kim), Robert and Arthur; one sister, Bertha Laughlin, and one great grandson, Collin Book; Hershel worked as an alignment specialist for Newnam’s Tire Service, and for Smith Enterprise, both of Angola; prior to that he owned Tri-State Texaco in Jamestown township. He volunteered much of his time to Fremont Community Church and food pantry. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 pm Saturday November 3, 2018 at the Fremont Community Church, 601 North Coldwater Street, Fremont, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, prefer memorials be made to Fremont Community Church.
