Obituary of Jessie T. Bevins

Jessie T. Bevins, age 83, of Fremont, Indiana, passed away March 11, 2013, at Lakeland Nursing Center in Angola, Indiana. Mr. Bevins was born in Wise, Virginia, on May 5, 1929, the son of a farmer and one of 10 children. There were seven boys and three girls, and his parents were Duncan Allen and Lucinda Larue (Smith) Bevins. They preceded him in death. Jessie attended J.J. Kelly High School, after which he worked in the coal mines from 1946 to 1952. In 1950, he married Nell Ruth Adkins in Wise, Virginia, and they had three sons, Elmer and Delmer were twins, and another son, Thomas. Delmer died at 5 days old and Elmer was killed in the armed services. Son, Thomas, married Marcia Schaeffer, and they have two children, Heather and Christopher. In 1952, Jessie and Ruth moved to Michigan City, Indiana, and after working in a factory for a year, he started working with the Martin Oil Service. He helped to open the Martin Oil service station in Fremont in 1956, and became manager and supervisor and retired after 40 years of service. In 1957, he became a member of Hugh Latham Lodge IOOF in Coeburn, Virginia. His father-in-law took his petition, and his grandfather-in-law gave the work of the Noble Grand, which had left a lasting impression on him. In 1958, Jessie transferred to the Steuben Lodge # 231 in Fremont, Indiana. When Fremont consolidated with Angola, he became a member of the Angola Lodge # 180. He has held an elective office all but two years since becoming a member. Jessie became a member of the Heaton Encampment in 1958. He also was a member of all branches of the Masonic organizations, and lifetime member of Star Lodge F & AM Orland Ind., and Mizpah Shrine in Fort Wayne. He was a former member of the Angola Moose Lodge, and was a founding member of the Fremont Moose Lodge, and also belonged to the Sons of the American Legion Post 31, Angola. He will be missed by his constant companion, his dog “Teddy.” Surviving are his wife, Nell Ruth Bevins of Fremont, Ind.; one son, Tom and Marcia Bevins of Fremont, Ind.; two grandchildren Christopher Allen Bevins and Heather Marie (Jake) Baughman; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and James Baughman; two sisters, Margaret Miller of Winston Salem, N.C., and Sindia Ann Apple ofWise, Va.; and one brother,Robert Bevins of Wise, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Delmer and Elmer Bevins; three brothers, Beachel, Everett, and Clyde Bevins; and one sister, Eliza Lewis. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Beams Funeral Home in Fremont, Ind., with Odd Fellows Services at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont. Burial will be in Jamestown Cemetery in Fremont. Memorials are to the family. Condolences may be left on Mr. Bevin's website for the family.
