Born on September 7, 1940 in Edgerton, Ohio to the late Nick and Eleanor (Kimpel) Petras, Shirley’s life-long love of travel and adventure began shortly after her graduation from Fremont High School when she moved to Washington, DC as an operator for Western Union.
Her adventures continued when she met and married Daniel Morgan Cox, originally of Roanoke Rapids, NC. His naval career took them to Cuba and South Korea before they made their home in Maryland with their five children Larry, John, Dan, Bobby and Karen. A dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Shirley’s family was her life. She was the heart, soul and the glue that held generations together.
Shirley supported her family working both inside and outside the home. She worked at Magurder Grocery store where her friendly face was a delight to all. She was also integral to the success of the moving company that she and Dan owned.
Whether you knew her as mom, Grandma Shirley, Aunt Shirley, or as sister or wife, she always made sure those around her were loved, supported, and well fed! Whether during summer days by the backyard pool or holidays filled with laughter and love, she was the life of the party. The Shirley-sized hole in our hearts will never heal, but her love of life, family and friends lives on.
She is survived by her husband Daniel; her children John Cox of Derwood, MD, Dan Cox (Kim) of Damascus (MD), Bobby Cox (Beverly) of Warren, OH and Karen Resk (Chuck) of Chesterfield, MI daughter-in-law Mary Cox of Mt. Airy MD; grandchildren Jazmin Handley (Jonathan), Delaney Cox-Arguelles, Nick Cox (Katherine), Leah Cox, Shane Cox, Bryan Resk, Morgan Resk, Dylan Resk, Brennan Resk, Raquel Davis (Mike) Regina Miller (Tommy), and several great-Grandchildren; siblings Mary Draper (Dan), Helen Hall (Don deceased), David Petras (Sharon).
She was preceded in death by her son, Larry Cox and her granddaughter Cadence Cox.
