Fred G. Gabel, 95, of Fremont, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 8, 2018. He was born on November 10, 1922 in Fremont, Ohio. He was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic High School, and attended Miami University before enlisting in the United States Army in 1942. He served in the Asia Pacific Theater during WWII, and returned home in 1946 as a tech sergeant after receiving an honorable discharge. He married Kathryn Schell on March 17, 1945, and she preceded him in death in 1977. As a hardworking man, Fred acquired many careers over the years. He owned and operated Town and Country Market for many years, was a supervisor at Eckrich for 5 years, worked at Chrysler Toledo Machining Plant for 16 years until his first retirement, and moved on to Braun Engineering and later Superior Manufacturing in Port Clinton until his second retirement in 1991. When Fred wasn’t working, he participated in various memberships, including; the Fremont Elks, Eagles, Moose, VFW, American Legion, and St. Ann’s Catholic Church. In his downtime, Fred enjoyed traveling, watching sports, especially basketball, spending time with family, and proudly participated in the Honor Flight on June 11, 2011.
Left to cherish his memory are children; Michael (Kaye) Gabel of Naples, FL, Leslie (Neil) Staib of Fremont, OH, grandchildren; Troy Gabel, Stacy Bick, Milesa Brunetti, Kellie Cramer, Amy Staib, great-grandchildren; Clayton, Katherine, Mia, Katelyn, Brendan, Alexa, Claire, Cameron, Kyra, and Carter.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, 2 siblings, and 3 grandchildren.
Visitation will take place Friday, May 11, 2018 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Keller-Koch-Chudzinski Funeral Home, 416 S. Arch Street, Fremont, Ohio, 43420. Additional visiting will be held Saturday, May 12, 2018 from 9:30am to 10:00am at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 1021 W. State Street, Fremont, Ohio, 43420. A Mass of Resurrection will follow at 10:00am. Rev. Nathan Bockrath will be officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with military rights provided by the VFW and American Legion.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Foundation.
