October 25, 1926 – January 20, 2019
Marie (Borcherding) Pierce, of Helena, died on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at Elmwood Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing Center, Fremont, Ohio. She was born to Margaret (Busdicker) and Albert Borcherding on October 25, 1926. She attended Solomon Lutheran Christian Day School through the eighth grade and graduated in 1944 from Woodville High School. Over the years, she worked as a clerk/cashier for local grocery stores. She spent twenty years as a cashier, head cashier, and front supervisor for The Kroger Store in Fremont, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty-five years, Virgil R. Pierce. In their early years together they enjoyed John Wayne movies, square dancing, and raising their family of three daughters. During their retirement, they spent time traveling in their motor home to the forty-eight contiguous United States, Canada, and Mexico. Marie and Virgil loved children, and they spent many hours attending the sporting events and other activities of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren and taking them on camping adventures in their motor home. Throughout her life Marie enjoyed sewing, reading, tackling crossword puzzles, and corresponding with family and friends. She wrote many letters to family members spread throughout the United States and sent letters and postcards whenever she traveled. She maintained two pen pals from grammar school until their deaths in recent years.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her sister (Frances Frisch), her husband, one daughter (Virginia Pierce Hassen), one granddaughter (Tracey Marie Sterling), and one grandson (Rusty Hassen). She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl (Rob) Francis of Leland, North Carolina, and Gaye (Mark) Sterling of Helena, Ohio; six grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and her nephew, Denny Frisch. Marie was devoted to her family. Through her example she taught us kindness, generosity, love, and Christian living, for which we all are deeply grateful.
