June 22, 1927 – October 7, 2018
Raye Smith, 91, formerly of Fremont, passed away at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky, on Sunday, October 7, 2018. He was born on June 22, 1927 in Nash County, North Carolina. Raye enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945, and was honorably discharged in 1946. He dated Sameler “Miss Tiny” Smith for many years, and stated that he wanted to marry her to make her an honorable woman, and give her his name. They were finally married, and spent many happy years together until her passing on October 22, 2011. Although they never had children, Raye and Tiny owned five dogs that they loved like their children. Raye enjoyed taking Tiny fishing and spending quality time together, as well as watching “Walker, Texas Ranger”, which was his favorite show. He was a hard worker, retiring after many years from Heinz, and spending his free time being handy around his house.
Left to cherish his memory are his many nieces and nephews, in-laws, and close friends. Raye’s like to extend a special thanks to the Family Worship Center in Fremont for the great compassion and support they showed him after his wife passed.
Visitation will be held Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 1:00pm to 1:30pm at Keller-Koch-Chudzinski Funeral Home, 416 S. Arch Street, Fremont, OH, 43420. Funeral services will begin at 1:30pm at the funeral home. Pastor Lydia Clowers will be officiating. Military Honors provided by the VFW and American Legion will follow the funeral services. Raye will be laid to rest with his wife at a later date at Forest Cemetery in Toledo, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Family Worship Center, 120 E. State Street, Fremont, Ohio, 43420.
