

Robert L. “Bob” Beck loved life and fought long and hard to stay with us. Robert, 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 12 , 2015 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. He was born February 16, 1931 in Elmore, Ohio to Robert H. and Elva (Hetrick) Beck. He graduated from Fremont Ross High School in 1949 and attended The Ohio State University where he played football for the Buckeyes until being called to the military during the Korean Conflict. He served in Korea as a Corporal in the 7th Army, 31st Regiment of the infantry and was awarded many medals and commendations including the 50 year Commemorative Medal.
Bob was a salesman for R.J. Reynolds Co., opened and managed a men’s clothing store in Tiffin, OH and retired from the State of Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Following retirement he drove veterans to Cleveland, Toledo and Ann Arbor for their medical appointments.
He loved sports, whichever was in season. In high school he participated in football, basketball and track. In his senior year he was Captain of the football and basketball teams and was first string All Ohio as a fullback. He has been inducted into Fremont Ross Hall of Fame.
During his lifetime he belonged to many groups and organizations. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Fremont Country Club where he was a former board member and an avid golfer achieving 2 holes in one on their course. He was an active member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks #169, for nearly 60 years, The American Legion and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. For the past 30 years he has been actively involved with the Disabled American Veterans and was presently the Commander. He has been a board member of the Sandusky County Veterans Services Commission for the last 11 years.
Bob had a special love for his family, especially his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Peggy (Russell) Beck of Fremont, OH; children Barbara Conley of Fremont, OH and Betsy (Bernie) Meleski of Dublin, OH; 6 grandchildren: Kelly (Phil) Conley, Virginia Beach, VA; Kevin (Miranda) Conley, Fremont, OH; K.C. (Sarah) Meleski , E. Greenwich, RI; Matthew (Jenna) Meleski, Delaware, OH; Michelle (Tom) Nichalson, New York, New York; Melissa Meleski, Columbus, OH; 7 great-grandchildren; brother David Beck of Fremont, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law Linda Key Beck.
The family would like to thank Rick McKinley, friend and caregiver of 7 years as well as the girls at the Dialysis Center, they were wonderful to him.
A Mass of Memorial will take place at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at St. Ann Catholic Church, where visitation will begin at 9:30A.M. Rev. Michael Zacharias will officiate. Committal services will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, with military graveside rights performed by the V.F.W and American Legion.
