Elizabeth Alma Schlagheck (Sr. Mary Alma Schlagheck,RSM) was born December 31, 1916 in Toledo, Ohio to Catherine Elizabeth (Tuite) and Francis Alphonse Schlagheck. She attended St. Francis de Sales and St. Vincent de Paul grade schools, completed her secondary education at
Notre Dame Academy in Toledo and at Our Lady of the Pines, Fremont, OH, She received her Bachelor Degree in Education in 1943 from Mary Manse College and her Masters in Education from St. Louis University in 1966 Sr. Mary Alma entered the Sisters of Mercy on September 24, 1932 and made her final profession of her vows on August 16, 1938 at Our Lady of the Pine in Fremont, OH. She served God’s children by teaching in elementary schools in Toledo, OH, Upper Sandusky, OH, Kirby, OH, and Mansfield, OH. She also assumed the position of Principal in some of the schools and taught music. In 1958 she
moved to secondary education at McAuley High School in Toledo and remained there as Director of Home Economics until the school closed in 1988. Then she and her sister, Sr. Rosemary Schlagheck(who entered the Sisters of Mercy in1938) moved to Our Lady of the Pines in Fremont, OH to be members of the Retreat Center Team. In 2006 Sr. M. Alma retired to St. Bernardine Home in Fremont, OH. On February 29, 2012 Sr. Mary Alma celebrated her 80th Anniversary as a Sister of Mercy. It was a quiet celebration as Sister was failing. She enjoyed being honored. Sister was a happy, peaceful, prayerful, and loving Sister of Mercy. Her Rosary is probably worn out as she used it so frequently. When she was able, she was there to assist whomever was in need. Sister Mary Alma’s parents and brothers, Paul, Walter, and Francis J. are deceased. She has many
loving nieces and nephews, her sister, Sister Rosemary, her Mercy Sisters in religion, and Mrs. Louise Schlagheck, her sister-in-law. Visitation and Funeral Mass will be at St. Bernardine Home in Fremont, OH. Visitation on Friday, March 16, 2012 will be held from 3pm until 7pm, and on Saturday, March 17, 2012 from 9am until 10:30. The Funeral Liturgy and Mass will be at 11am at St. Bernardine Home, followed by burial in Our Lady of the Pines Cemetery.
