Adele Homsy nee Slayman, was born on August 1, 1913, in Cambridge Ohio, the second of four children of Joseph and Jennie Slayman. As a child she moved to Fresno via Lindsay, where her family owned a farm and the Slayman Fruit Packing Plant.
Adele graduated from Fresno Tech High School and cared for her little brother and sister during the depression while she worked as a secretary. When the banks closed and Adele was left with no cash, a family friend, George Homsy, gave Adele some money from the sale of a mule to buy groceries. Despite the 12 year age difference, their love grew from there, and on October 28, 1934 she and George married. During their 71 plus years together, Adele and George ran their ranches, raised four children, and enjoyed spoiling their grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Adele was a devout catholic, active in her church for all of her life. She quietly devoted her time to many wonderful causes.
At St. John School she chaired the PTA, served as room mother, organized school fairs, acted as Scout leader, and even taught kindergarten.
On Adele's initiative, she and her family opened their home to unwed mothers and minority students during an era when these acts of kindness were unusual.
Adele was active in the founding of Poverello House, which serves Fresno's homeless, hungry and sick.
She was a charter member of the Queen of the Holy Family Guild, serving as chairperson for fund-raising dinners, teas, and flea market sales. She played a mean game of bridge, even instructing others in the group at St. Anthony of Padua.
Adele had a romance with cars. She got her first driver's license at 13 years of age, and fudged a couple of inches, claiming that she was five feet tall. In her eighties and nineties she could be seen cruising around in her red convertible, sometimes with her golf clubs in the trunk.
On October 3, 2014, Adele quietly left this earth for heaven. She was 101 years old.
She is survived by her four children, J. Dennis "Buzz" Homsy, Barbara Adele Luthin (nee Homsy), George Mitchell "Bud" Homsy, and Robert Victor Homsy.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic church on Monday, October 13, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.
