Alejandro "Alex" Garcia Bernal

October 11, 1949 – September 2, 2020
Obituary of Alejandro "Alex" Garcia Bernal
IN THE CARE OF

Whitehurst Sullivan Burns & Blair Funeral Home

Alejandro Garcia Bernal “Alex”, “Papa”, passed away peacefully in Fresno, CA at the age of 70. Alex is survived by his wife, Guadalupe C. Bernal, daughter, Kathleen S. Hernandez, and son, Thomas A. Bernal, granddaughters, Jackleen and Jazmine Hernandez, grandsons, JT Hernandez and Logan Bernal, great-grandchildren Audrey and Michael Felix and siblings, Jose Bernal, Roy Bernal, Sheila Alvarado, Marsha Valencia, and Gloria Contreras.

Alex Bernal was born on October 11, 1949 in Progreso, Texas. Alex graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1968 and joined the US Navy serving from 1969 to 1970 in the Vietnam War. Shortly after returning from the war, Alex returned to Fresno and married the love of his life Guadalupe Castillo.

Alex worked for the Fresno State University facility department for 24 years. His accomplishments and pride came from him servicing the athletics department, which included the Jim Sweeney Stadium, Biden Field, and the agricultural department at Fresno State University. His love for his work came in the form of volunteering as a chain gang member during the football season and turned him into a season ticket holder until he passed.

Alex loved attending church, football games, and taking vacations to the beach with his family. He was a generous man who loved being in good company of friends and family.

A service is scheduled for September 11, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Northeast Assembly of God Church on 4386 N. Chestnut Ave., Fresno, CA 93726.

Pastor Jim Mattix will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Alex Bernal’s life
