

Working alongside his parents, brothers and sisters in the fields. His mother often stressed the importance of education. He did not disappoint his mother, graduating from Central Union High school, Fresno City College and Fresno State with his Master's Degree in social work. It was during his years at Fresno State that he took on issues of educational and social injustices towards Chicano youth, parents and the community. This led to the development of the Chicano Youth Center which he founded in 1978 and was the Director for over 30 years. Alfonso was well known as a community activist and leader. His dedication and tireless work to provide services for Chicano youth is his legacy.
Alfonso Hernandez Jr. is survived by his mother, Mary Lou Hernandez, sisters Maria Rodriguez, Anita Torres, Rita Amesquita and Santos Torres, Brothers Felix, Daniel, Joe and Tony Hernandez, Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, January 15,2015 from 10:00 am until 6:30 pm. at Lisle Funeral Home with the Recitation of the Rosary to follow at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday January 16, 2015 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel at 10:00 am with burial to follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.
