OBITUARY

Alfred "Al" H. Mendoza

September 12, 1929 – March 12, 2020
Obituary of Alfred "Al" H. Mendoza
IN THE CARE OF

Whitehurst Sullivan Burns & Blair Funeral Home

Surrounded by family, our loving Dad died peacefully on March 12, 2020. Alfred H. Mendoza was born in Calexico, California on September 12, 1929 to Rafael and Rosario Mendoza. He was essentially the middle child in a family consisting of 6 brothers and 2 sisters. The family moved from Calexico to San Diego and then settled in Fresno, CA. Al, as he was known, graduated from Edison High School in 1948 and was named an All City Football Running Back in his senior year. He attended Fresno City College for a time playing some football there. Al was an avid 49ers and SF Giants fan. He served honorably in the Korean War and attended Fresno State College (as it was known back then) upon his return from the war. He worked for the State of California, Dept. of Transportation retiring after 31 years.

Al was very much a family man and leaves behind his devoted wife of 64 years, Marti Mendoza, daughter Renee Mendoza, daughter in law, Linda Mendoza and two granddaughters, Lauren and Cheryl Mendoza. His son, Randy Mendoza pre-deceased him. He also leaves behind one brother Henry Mendoza and

many nieces and nephews.

We wish we could give him one last hug and to be able to tell him how much we loved him. Nevertheless we were truly blessed to have Dad in our lives as long as we did. He provided unwavering support in all our endeavors, was a source of strength during our lowest moments and celebrated with us during our greatest achievements. Our lives won’t be the same without him. His dry sense of humor, enthusiasm for life and that

smile that lit up his face will always be remembered.

The family will hold a private burial at St. Peter’s Cemetery.

A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life reception will be held later this year when restrictions due to the

Coronavirus have been lifted.

Remembrances in Al’s name can be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
