Alice Claire Hummel Johnson of Fresno, CA was born on May 28, 1919, in Ellsworth, KS, and passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at the age of 98. She was one of six children of George and Emily Hummel. The family lived on a diversified farm in Ellsworth County, KS. She was a graduate from Ellsworth High School in 1936, and went on to complete her education at Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism in 1941.
She taught at Lorraine High School in Kansas for several years. After moving to Fresno, CA, she taught English and Journalism from 1946 to 1953, at Kerman Union High School, and was Dean of Girls there for three years. She was married to L.G. Johnson in 1948, and the Johnsons lived on their ranch near Fresno for more than 60 years.
Alice Johnson was a member of the St. Columba's Episcopal Church in Fresno. For many years she was the adult learder of Central High School 4-H club.
She is survived by her four daughters, Emily Coffer, Barbara Williford and her husband Bruce of Fresno, CA, Joyce Johnson- Hackbarth and her husband Warren of San Jose, CA, and Laura Fiddler and her husband Dave of Bakersfield, CA. She also leaves behind five grandchildren, Scott Coffer and his wife Gina, Katherine and Kimberly Fiddler, Wesley and Megan Williford; and one great-granddaughter, Makenzie Coffer. She also leaves behind a sister, Jean King of Bartlesville, OK.
Visitation will be held at Stephens & Bean Funeral Chapel on Friday, March 16, 2018, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
A Funeral Service will be held at Stephens & Bean Funeral Chapel on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at 10:00 a.m.
A Graveside Service will be held at Fresno Memorial Gardens on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at 1:00 p.m.
