Anna Laura “Jane” Ochinero Ferdinandi passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family and caregivers. Born on June 7, 1930, Jane peacefully entered the arms of our Lord on October 14, 2026.
Jane was the youngest of nine children born to Anthony “Tony” and Anna Marie (Chiafala) Ochinero, who immigrated from Machito, Potenza, Italy, to America in 1900 and 1905, respectively. Born in Fresno on June 7, 1930, she attended St. Alfonsos grammar school, then St. John’s, and later San Joaquin Memorial, where she met her future husband, Amedio (“Tom”). They were the first sophomore class to graduate from SJM and remained very close friends with many of their high school classmates throughout their lives.
Tom’s parents, John and Natalina (Cicellini) Ferdinandi, immigrated to America in 1920 from Pontecorvo in Italy’s Frosinone province of Lazio. After enduring too many harsh winters in Rochester, New York, they moved to Fresno in 1945 with Tom and his younger brother, John.
Jane and Tom married shortly after high school and welcomed four children: Laura, Tom, John, and David. Their large Italian Catholic family filled Ferdinandi and Ochinero gatherings with lively fun. Cherished memories included vacationing in Aptos, Santa Cruz, Pismo, and Shaver Lake, along with all the family home celebrations, featuring favorite recipes such as ricotta pancakes, pasta-la-ta soup, chingalings, sausage & meatballs, polpettes, and spinach calzones. By the time of Tom’s passing in 2022, he and Jane had celebrated 73 years of marriage and shared a deep love for each other, their family, their Church, and their community.
Tom and Jane were avid supporters of the Fresno State Bulldogs, San Joaquin Memorial High School, Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Saint Agnes Hospital, the Serra Club, Catholic Charities, the Catholic Diocese of Fresno, Nazareth House and the Poverello House. Jane was also an early and long-time member of the Candlelight Guild. Jane enjoyed tennis, walking, travel and family gatherings, especially with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; her parents, Tony and Anna Marie Ochinero; her siblings, Joe Ochinero, Mamie Ochinero Rossi, Grace Ochinero Yovannides, Frank Ochinero, James Ochinero, Rosalie Ochinero Wampler , Elizabeth "Betty" Ochinero Fry, and Alvena Ochinero, and all their respective spouses. She is survived by her children and their spouses: John and Laura Mahoney, Tom Jr. and Karen Ferdinandi, John and Christine Ferdinandi, and David and Wendy Ferdinandi. Known as “Nonnie” to twelve grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, she taught everyone to have “faith, hope, trust, and love and leave the rest in God’s hands.”
The family is deeply grateful to Nari, Ramona, Chantel, Maggie, and Theresa for the compassionate care they provided to their parents, and to the many other care givers, especially those at St. Mary’s hospice. Jane was also blessed by the many family members and friends who visited her and brought Holy Eucharist, meals, flowers, and, of course, their love and prayers over the years, especially since Tom’s passing.
Visitation will be held Thursday, November 5, 2026 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua, followed by recitation of the Rosary at 6:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, November 6, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua in Fresno, California.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a remembrance in Jane’s memory to Catholic Charities, San Joaquin Memorial High School, or the Candlelight Guild.
May Jane be remembered with love, and may her family and friends find comfort in the cherished memories they hold in their hearts.
