I met Art only once.  He returned a fishing reel to Big 5 and I handled the transaction.  He seemed super happy.  So much so that he wrote a kind letter to corporate. Dated March 14, 1980. He thanked Big 5 for having the good sense to hire me and was sure I'd go a long way in the company.  36 years later I'm a senior vice president.  Apparently Art was a good judge of character.  Who'd have thought.  I sure wish I had rediscovered the letter a few years ago to thank him and let him know of the outcome.

Dear Art,I will miss your big smile and agreat humor. In the years I have known you I can count the number of days on two hands but do rember that you are the only guy that could sell easko(sp) a truck load of ice cubes and make them like it.  You are one of a kind  keep smiling and I will see again. yo bro in law. Paul Mckinney

Art & I had a very special relationship going back to 1953.  We had lots of fun together in Norfolk with the Boy Scouts, the parties and I have great memories of things we can't discuss;  and the bonds which developed amongst us after you and El came along.  Despite the miles distant, our friendship was such that phone call just picked up from where we left off as if no time had passed.  I will always remember Art.  He meant so much to me in those early years and I learned a lot from him.  You cannot know how many times I would relate a story to someone about something we did together.  Each time, I will remember him fondly.
For Kelly: we'll always remember what a wonderful guy her Dad was.
I am so pleased that Al and Audrey attended.  As ever, we shall remain close friends,

MARCH 30, 2013 - MY BIRTHDAY TODAY,

Dear Art, 

How sad it was from me and Elaine (my wife)that I would miss wishing you a very happy birthday, on March 28th.

We had the same close group of friends as a TEENAGER for all of the years when you lived in New York with your folks. We had great parties in your home when your folks were travelling. I remember how you loved to cook and I remember your making 4 eggs for each of us with cold Saurer Krout, which we all loved...(we hadn't experienced Gormet cooking yet as Teen Agers, but in the years that followed and had experienced fine Gormet cooking, it was the 4 Eggs with Sauer Kraut, plus our 8 close friends at your apartment, that stood out. We were sorry to see you leave for California and certainly were concerned with the health problems you had. 

ENTER GAY INTO YOUR LIFE,WHICH NEEDED STABILITY BADLY. IT WAS THE BEST DECISION YOU EVER MADE. 

Thanks to Gay, you finally got your life on track, personnaly and business- wise. Elaine and I love her and were geatful he met someone of her quality to spend his life with.

I once met a man who entered my live loudly selling something....

A brash soul with kindness in his heart, he wore a jokers smile, a quip style joker, and the need to sell. A wild man at heart. My kinda guy.

Art sold himself with sincerity, he sold his organization anchored by Gay the billing machine.

Art loved the deal...the sale, the open, the close,
the glow he brought to a room when he smelled an order.

A story teller, sometimes they were new ones, he was good at embellishing to fit the audience.

Some people have IT, some more than others, this guy Art Spierer had time to laugh, time to care,
if you were in his life, he loved you unconditionally.

Each time he walked in a place of business, it was the Art Spierer Show.
Not everything was great in his life; he only complained enough to warm you up to a funny story.

We share the thoughts of the Great Sales Soul making new deals beyond our sight.
May we pray the he catches up to Jeff and waits for us to hear how the Saints bought some beads,
from the new New York kid, fresh in heaven.

Gay & Crew, Claudia and Mike are 250 miles from Fresno taking Chase back to college.
We will miss the ceremonies. Know that we care about your family and will forever.

Art you will be in my heart for eternity. You loved me when I Couldn't love my self. You gave me your gift of friendship in my darkest moments. Thank-you for the gift of life. Your old friend Louie.

The Spierer Family, i remember Art when i was a little girl.  He used to do business with my dad Ron Kodman and Color Glow. My dad was so tight with his money he wanted everything for free and my dad and Art would go round and round. But we also had a great visit and Art and my Dad would come out laughing. You were a very smart business man and man in general.  It was a pleasure knowing you and Gay.  I also knew Jeff from the rooms and when he died i didnt know that was Arts son. It could have been me I told Art he said he knew. I would see him off and on at Kaiser and Weight Watchers he would talk great about any 12 step program and encourage you. Art was like a father to me,he was also a dear friend,very few people have taught me more about the meaning of life then Art,I loved this man and will never ever forget him.
