Carl Everet Ostergaard

January 20, 1930 - March 26,2013

Carl passed away very peacefully to our heavenly Father on March 26, 2013. He was born to Cecelia and Carl H Ostergaard. In 1946, Carl, SR. opened a Family based hardware business located in Fresno CA. When Carl, Jr. returned from active duty in the Army, fighting the Korean War, father and son teamed up in the family business. Their store was named Madison Hardware. Carl married his one and only love, Laverna Knisley 60 years ago. They successfully worked side-by-side for 60 years in the business until retiring in 2006. Laverna and Carl knew their success was based in the family and friend relationships of their community. Madison Hardware is one of the last of its kind. A family business that served the community as a neighbor and a friend.

Our father never knew a stranger. He was a kind and gentle spirit, a good listener and a problem solver. Carl was nick-named 'Pal' by his loving daughters and their mother agreed, saying "It's a blessing to have a dad who is also a friend and pal." He was a member of the NRA, Danish Historical Society, the Fresno Trade Club and the Edison Social Club. He was an avid hunter and sportsman. Pal was a marksman and a sergeant in the military. He enjoyed quail and dove hunting with his brothers Dick and Dean. He enjoyed gardening and faithfully planted his tomatoes yearly. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Carl is survived by his loving and caring wife Laverna, sister; Beverly; daughter, Karlene and her husband Jim Stefani, and three loving grandchildren, Brieann, Drake and Darien Stefani and daughter Kathy Ostergaard. He is also survived by his brother Dean Best; the Mehling Family; Larry Ostergaard, Janet Scharton, the Hansen family and the Sorensen family.

Many Thanks to his wonderful caregiver, Laura, Dr. Owen and Chris RN, with special thanks to St. Agnes Hospice's staff and Anne RN.

A private Graveside service will be at Fresno Memorial Gardens.

Just heard the sad news. My deepest condolences. Carl was a great man and good friend. Always enjoyed my visits to the hardware store and your home.

To the Ostergaard family,
So very sorry to hear of Carl's death. My Father was faithful customer of Madison Hardware. Your Dad knew me from my early childhood as I was a frequent visitor to his store with my Father. I have many pleasant memories of your Father, Mother & Grand parents.I used to love to walk around the store trying to figure out what things were. And I usually got a soda pop to enjoy while the adults were doing business! And as I grew up & moved on I often returned to the store because of the warm welcome & fantastic customer service & good advice on how to repair items.
Carl will be greatly missed in my life but I will always cherish those childhood visits to Madison Hardware & the people who made me feel welcome.
May God comfort you with the many good memories you have of your husband, Father, friend. Sincerely Zella (Angarano) Grassi

Our deepest sympathy to the Ostergaard Family on the passing of their
dear Husband, Father, Grandfather, and good friend to members of the
community. We always loved going to "Madison Hardware", for any item we
needed on the "ranch", ....tools, or any item you could not find anywhere in
Fresno. Carl and LaVerne knew what their customers needed. Please know our prayers are with the family. from Cliff and Madeline Gartin

My family lived across from the hardware store for years
Melvin & Louise Deaile were my parents and I am their daughter and remember going to the store from the time I was a little girl with my dad. These were all good hardworking and kind neighbors and friends . Thank you and may god bless your family at this time

My father, Oscar E. "Bus" Helm, thought a lot of Carl and his family. While working in the field for PG&E, he would frequently visit the Ostergaard Hardware Store (on his breaks, of course). One of my fondest memories is the large, white and brown stuffed dog he brought home for me from the store (which seemed to sell everything). So, on behalf of my late father who is probably visiting now with Carl, may I express our sorrow for your loss.

Carl was my big brother--18 years older and 6'5"--and he will be missed. Kind, agreeable, and funny to the end.
