Daisy Gong Shiu was born in Ping Shan, Lok Chong Village, Guangdong, China on March 23,1936. Her parents were Chong Kong and Woon Chuen Shiu. She passed peacefully in Bakersfield, CA on December 8, 2025, at the age of 89, surrounded by her loving family.
Daisy attended school in Guangzhou. Leaving communist China, she made her way to Hong Kong to stay with her uncle. She met her husband Howe Gong Shiu in Hong Kong, and they married in 1957. They lived in Macau for a short time before settling in Hong Kong where their first five children were born. In May 1966, the family boarded a Pan Am airplane and flew to San Francisco Airport to begin their new life in America. They reunited with Howe’s father Jong Gong Shiu, mother Wong Chai, and brother Ben in Fresno, CA. Their last child was born in 1968 in Fresno, CA.
The family lived in Fresno for a while, but eventually moved around the Central Valley to work in restaurants and grocery stores in various cities like Madera, Chowchilla, Stockton, Atwater, Selma, and ended up in Hanford, CA. It was in Hanford that Howe and his brother opened the Hong Kong Chop Suey restaurant in April, 1973, which was an immediate success. However, the success was temporary, and Howe was bought out by his father and brother in 1974. When one door closes, a window opens as Howe and Daisy bought a corner lot in Hanford and built their own restaurant, the Asian Garden, in 1975. In 1980, they opened a second restaurant, the New China Chinese Food in Lemoore, CA. In 1988, after retiring from the restaurant business, Daisy and Howe moved to Bakersfield, CA to help care for their grandchildren living in that city.
Daisy enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, and taking care of her grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling to Asia, Australia, and Canada, plus taking cruises to Alaska and Mexico. She traveled multiple times to China with Howe, her children, and grandchildren, visiting their ancestral villages in the Guangzhou area.
Daisy is predeceased by her parents and sister, Nancy Siu. She is survived by her loving husband, Howe, of 68 years; daughters: Anne Wong (Eddie,) Stefanie Cho (Larry,) Joyce Young (Thomas); sons: George Shiu (Janette,) Jimmy Shiu, TJ Shiu; grandchildren: Brittany, Justin, Megan, Lindsay, Brandon, Erik, Lauren, Jordan, Blake, Tiffany, James; great-grandchildren: Cayla, Maci, Ella, Peyton, Ythan, Asher, Charlotte, Seraphine, Ryker, Ezra, Eliyah, Ryan, Olivia, Ryder, James Jr.; as well as her brother Patrick Kong (Juliana.)
