Daniel William McCarthy, our loving, awesome dad, peacefully passed away to be with his loving wife, on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at the ripe young age of 93. He was surrounded by his devoted family.
Our daddy was an extraordinary, incredible, loving man. We were truly blessed to be a part of his life. He never met a person who wasn't his friend. Daddy-O had a great sense of humor, making all who knew him laugh. When you think of McCarthy, you remember what his generation was truly all about. His remarkable moral compass, dedication, and the love of family and friends were the attributes of his life. He was a man of his word, remembered by all who knew him, for these values. Our dad was a very nurturing, caring, loving father, who was always there for his family.
Dad was born of a pioneer family in Bishop, Ca, who homesteaded Round Valley. He was affectionately known by his lifelong friend, Ernest S. Kinney, Sr., as "Flywheel McCarthy," because of his love of fly fishing. After graduating from USC, Dad proudly served his country in the United States Army.
In 1947 he married the love of his life, Pauline D. Cervelli. They were married for 64 years. Dad, being the easy going guy that he was, made this everlasting love a commitment for life. Dad was a loyal employee of Norman S. Wright for over 40 years. Daddy loved his golf and was one of the early members of the Fig Garden Golf Club. He had many great times with his golfing buddies, often celebrating with a Jim Beam cocktail.
The Fish Camp cabin was his hide away. Dad loved to spend time there with his family, friends, and treasured pets. We all loved the many poker games we shared around a roaring fire. Dad also loved to play Solitaire and "beat the house" as he would say.
Dandy Dad, as he was affectionately called by his twin daughters, was a truly kind and gentle soul, who touched all our lives. He will be deeply missed. We will treasure our most precious memories. Dad and Grandpa will be in our hearts forever.
Dan is preceded in death by his wife.
He is survived by his three children, Bill McCarthy, Debbie Christian and her husband Jim, Denise Huffman and her husband Bob, and a long time "third daughter," Joann McCarthy. He is also survived by two grandsons, James Beck and his wife, Renee, and their four daughters, and Michael McCarthy; and two furry grandchildren, Sunnie and Squeaky.
A Funeral Service will be held at Stephen & Bean Chapel, on Saturday, December 17, 2011, at 11:00 a.m.
