In the second grade, she was chosen to be the flower girl for the May Day Queen at Washington Union high school's big May Day celebration, the first of May. During her years at elementary school she was streamer holder, maypole dancer, and a square dancer. She learned to play the flute and learned to play the piano by ear, she was also active in the insect club that she helped form. They had three members and they all held office, it lasted one summer. Doris loved being a grandmother (Nani) and developed special relations with many of her nieces and nephews. Doris enjoyed going fast. She enjoyed both snow and water skiing, but she really loved being behind the wheel of a car. There are many witnesses to those episodes in a car. She enjoyed out of town trips to the racetrack, shopping trips with the girls, and trips to pro sports games. She loved the San Francisco Giants and was fortunate to be able to get to a few games at the ballpark in her last years.
