Ernie lived in Fresno and Los Angeles, and attended Teague Elementary. He later earned his GED from Central High School in Fresno—an early reflection of the steady determination that would shape his life.
He served in the Marine Corps Reserves, carrying forward a sense of duty and reliability that those who knew him came to trust.
Ernie met his wife, Judy Ann Vallandingham, “dragging main” on Fulton Street, a beginning that grew into a life centered on devotion to family and the simple, enduring value of showing up for the people who matter. They enjoyed 64 wonderful years of marriage together.
A man who came from humble beginnings, Ernie built a life defined by hard work and practical skill. He owned Smithey's Diesel Service in Kerman, where his mechanical knowledge was more than a trade—it was part of how he enjoyed life and helped others do the same. He was known as a good friend who took care of people, and he lived with an unmistakable appreciation for family, racing, and the days well spent.
Ernie found joy in pursuits that matched his energy and love of living. Ernie had a profound love for motorcycle racing, off-road racing, drag-boat racing, sprint car racing, and building hot rods. Whether in the garage or at the track, he brought a hands-on spirit and a genuine enthusiasm for the fun and freedom those passions offered.
Ernie was preceded in death by his father, Ernest S. Smithey, and his mother, Vera (Hendrix) Smithey.
He is survived by his spouse, Judy Ann (Vallandingham) Smithey; daughter, Darla (Brian) Weber; granddaughter, Courtney (Chris) Grimm; granddaughter, Carly Weber; granddaughter, Chelsea Weber; great-grandson, Hudson Grimm; great-grandson, Reid Grimm; great-granddaughter, Colette Grimm; sister and her spouse, Rita (Tom) Deaver; and sister-in-law, Janice Carlson.
