My mom, Esther J Morris, was born in Lincoln Nebraska on Sept 27, 1931, to Josiah and Lillie Young. She had three sibling’s sisters Dorothy and Frances and her brother Bob, who was killed in the war. They lived in a small suburb of Lincoln, called Havelock, which is similar to Fresno and Clovis. Shortly after graduating from Northeast High, she met, and married, my dad Merle Hatfield. He joined the Airforce, and they were off to Maine (that’s where their first son, Mark, entered the picture). After discharge from the service, they moved back to Lincoln where dad became a civil engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation. We were off to the 1st stop Yuma Az (that’s where her second son Gregg came in) after that project was done, Norman Oklahoma (home of the Sooners bitter rivals of the two Cornhuskers). From Norman it was off to Salida Colorado, for a short stint in snow country. Then dad accepted the job in California, and we were off to Fresno. That’s where life changed, mom and dad went their separate ways.
She joined Parents without Parents and met the man that was to be the love of her life, David Morris. Along with a new husband, Esther gained five more sons David Jr, Chet, Rod, Chris and Joel.
They were an active couple always on the go. They enjoyed socializing with friends, square dancing, traveling and their church. Every year they spent their anniversary in Pacific Grove. Mom and Dave were very active in United Christian Church. Esther was an avid volunteer at the local hospitals in some way. Her and David had a wonderful life together all the way to the passing of David in December 2021.
Some of the things we talked about, was how much she missed David. Well, they’re together again. Mom you will be sorely missed. You fought the good fight, you never gave up, rest in peace… you deserve it.
A funeral service for Esther will be held Wednesday, October 26, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Stephens and Bean Funeral Chapel, 202 North Teilman, Fresno, CA 93706.
