Eugene Rhoads Wilburn

Eugene Rhoads Wilburn, affectionately known as Jake, passed away peacefully at Hinds Hospice in Fresno, California on December 18, 2025, at the age of 87, following complications from Parkinson’s disease.

Born on December 31, 1938 in California, Jake lived a full and spirited life rooted in hard work, humor, and generosity. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as a clerk, stationed at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. After his service, he returned to California and eventually settled in Fresno, where he spent many years working as a skilled mechanic on Harley-Davidson motorcycles in his garage. His love for bikes extended beyond the wrench—he was an active member of The 5 Diamonds, a Fresno motorcycle club where camaraderie and chrome went hand in hand.

Jake found joy in fishing, brewing his own beer, and playing Santa Claus each Christmas, bringing warmth and laughter to family and neighbors alike. His playful spirit and steady hands made him a fixture in his community and a cherished presence in the lives of those who knew him.

He was formerly married to the late Kathy Schaefer, with whom he shared two children: Laurence Eugene Wilburn and Cindy Willard, both of whom reside in North Idaho. Jake is also survived by his sister, Jo Williams of Long Beach, CA. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bethany Rhoads Wilburn; his adopted father, Clyde “Pop” Wilburn; his younger brother Larry; and his biological father, Glen Shook, who tragically drowned with Larry in an accident many years ago.

Jake’s loyal dog, Coco, was his constant companion in his later years. She has since been adopted by a local family and is doing well—bringing comfort to those who knew how much she meant to him.

Jake’s legacy lives on in the stories he told, the engines he tuned, and the love he gave freely. His family will remember him as a man who could fix anything, laugh at everything, and love without hesitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Parkinson’s research or local veterans’ organizations in Jake’s memory.
