Henry Mercado Ortega
December 25, 1923 – August 3, 2019
95, Henry M. Ortega Sr. went home to be with the Lord on August 3, 2019, succumbing to lymphatic cancer.
He joined the US Army following graduation from Edison High School. His company convoyed medical equipment into the interior of China along the Burma Road. At field hospitals, then, Henry serviced the wounded as medic until returning home in 1946. He remained an active member of VA Post 884 thereafter. Family recalls many valley parades in which he and other veterans marched proudly as color guards.
Henry founded his locally owned and operated company in 1948. His professional reputation for dependability and honesty are business traditions carried-on today by Henry Jr. Ortega's Landscaping. The company is very proud of the number of long-time and second-generation customers.
Dad is happily reunited with his life-long soulmate, Carmelita, who preceded him in death in 2015. Their 72-year marriage was one of love and devotion. They "dated" every Saturday night without fail!
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and support staff of Optimal Hospice Home Care. Thank-you Intha, Patricia, Laura, Diane, Terrance and Pastor Frank. Thank-you Denise (Dee! !), and Debbie, our home-care angels. Thank-you David, from Sacred Heart Church, you faithfully brought Dad weekly Eucharist and shared with us Dad's favorite 23rd Psalm. Your help, expertise and genuine kindness while managing Dad's mental, spiritual, as well as physical needs, went above and beyond. Your hugs were needed, your love sincere.
Thank-you to the Sacred Heart Guadalupe Society for all your prayers during his illness. Mom and Dad reminisced often of the happy and holy times shared as long-time members.
Hospice is an uncharted journey for the entire family. Thank-you for traveling with us.
Henry was a loving son, husband, father, father-in-law and friend. His 3 children: Henry Jr., Stephen and Neen (Louise Ann) along with 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren bid you farewell, Papo. We miss you so.
Recitation of the Rosary and celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, August 23, 2019. This will take place in St. Anthony's Chapel on the grounds of St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery. Military Gravesite honors will conclude the service.
