

Herb was born on February 14, 1948, in Springfield, MA. to Herbert Randolph Knowlton Sr., and Jean Knowlton nee’ Strachan. He attended college at Tampa University where he earned his B.A. in History in 1970 and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. After graduating, Herb joined the Marine Corps, serving on active duty from 1971 to 1973. After being Honorably Discharged Herb served in the Reserves for many years, earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Herb worked in the life insurance industry, working with several companies through the years. As a pastime, Herb enjoyed golfing and had a regular group of friends he played with. Herb was the treasurer of the Madera Masonic Lodge and was a member of the Shriners. He enjoyed his cigars and often frequented The Perfect Blend in the Tower District. Later in life he rediscovered his love of competitive shooting and won several awards for his accuracy.
Herb’s life was rich with a large group of diverse friendships. He will be fondly remembered by many and the lives that he touched are a lasting legacy. He is survived by his wife, Dana Knowlton, stepson Nicholas Puma and his wife Kelly, along with their children Lily and Jackson, honorary daughters Rebecca and Melissa Abrams and their families.
