

James passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2015. He was born in April of 1923, to Claude and Lona Appleby in Springfield, MO. His family relocated to Fresno, CA, in the early 1930's, where he spent the majority of his life until his passing.
He served honorably in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, with the 331" Bomber Wing as the intelligence officer. He participated in the planning and implementation of various missions, including the final Mission over Japan two days after the Atomic Bombs were dropped. He continued working with the Federal Government as a special agent after he was honorably discharged from the Air Corps at the end of the war, and then became a Private Investigator a few years later.
In 1958, he founded Appleby & Co., Inc., and was President of the firm until his retirement at age 70. His son, Steve Appleby, took over the reins of the company and assumed the role of President and General Manager.
Jim was also a past President of the Central California Adjuster's Association, and one of the founding members and Board members of Fresno Industrial Claims Association. Additionally, he was the Deputy Most Loyal Gander of the International Order of the Blue Goose and in later years, founded the Dead Duck's Social Club.
Jim loved to participate in three sports, golfing, hunting and fishing. In fact, he stated he loved golf specifically because he could do all three sports at once. Play golf, "Hunt" for lost balls in the rough, and "Fish" balls out of the water hazards. He was a dedicated fan of the Fresno State Bulldogs and a longtime supporter as well.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Susie, who passed at the age of 16, in 1965.
He is survived by Betty, his loving wife of 71 years; his daughter Carol; his son Steve; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. He is also survived by his two brothers, Don of Laguna Niguel, CA, and Gene of Morro Bay, CA; and his miniature Poodle, Little John. His legacy survives him and he specifically wished to say thanks for being good friends to Dan O'Brien, and Joe Igoa.
