James “Jim” Hiney, 78, passed away on December 25, 2025, surrounded by the family he loved so fiercely. Born and raised in Mahanoy City, PA, Jim built a life defined by devotion—to his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his work, and the many friends who were drawn to his warmth, humor, and generosity.
Jim spent his career as a dedicated hospital administrator, a role that perfectly matched his natural leadership, his drive to make things better, and his belief in serving others. He embraced every challenge with determination, always ready to take on a new project or lead meaningful change. His colleagues knew him as a steady, thoughtful presence who led with both intelligence and heart. During his time with SIRS, he continued to lead, inspire change, and enjoy the companionship of the many activities and friendships he cultivated there.
Outside of work, Jim lived life with enthusiasm and a competitive spark. He loved golf, fishing, his BBQ, making brunch for his grandkids, and settling into his favorite chair. He cherished board games with the family after special meals, poker nights, and countless Canasta games with his wife, Cheryl. A gifted storyteller, Jim delighted in sharing embellished tales from his childhood, fishing trips, rounds of golf, and the unforgettable moments he first shared with Cheryl in San Diego—the love of his life. Married for 56 years, the two traveled the world together, visiting his “Spanish family” in Madrid, Spain, and taking cruises across the globe—from Alaska to Germany, across the Atlantic, and even through the Panama Canal. For more than 40 years, he treasured the cool summer mornings on the deck in San Luis Obispo, making memories along the Central Coast with Cheryl and the top down in the “Stang.”
Jim was a man who loved big. He found joy in food, laughter, good company, and the simple pleasure of being surrounded by the people he cared about. He believed deeply in family first—supporting his children in every endeavor, coaching their sports teams, and later pouring his whole heart into being a grandfather. His grandchildren were his pride and joy.
He was proud of many accomplishments throughout his life: his service in the U.S. Navy, including two tours during the Vietnam War; earning his college degree and later his master’s; and rising to become a respected hospital administrator. Later in life, he was honored to participate in the Honor Flight. But above all, he was proud of being a husband, father, and grandfather.
Jim will be remembered for his kindness, his generosity with his time, his ability to see the good in everyone, and his unwavering love for his family. He was a passionate sports fan, a loyal friend, and a man who lived fully, laughed loudly, and loved deeply.
