Joyce Shizuko Tuck was born on October 26, 1943 in the Japanese-American internment camp at Gila River, AZ to Takuichi and Kiyomi Tanimoto. She passed away on May 5, 2018 in Clovis, CA from complications related to cancer. She grew up in Sanger, CA, and graduated as salutatorian from Sanger High School in 1961. She was also one of the few women to graduate with a B. S. degree in chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.
She married Burnis (Gene) Tuck in 1965, and they raised two daughters, Anna and Laura, in Oakland, CA; Portland, OR; and Port Angeles, WA. Because Joyce was a caregiver dedicated to family values, once her daughters had grown up, she and Gene moved back to the Central Valley to help take care of her mother and brother Frank.
Joyce worked as a chemist for several years in Port Angeles, and then became an award-winning watercolor artist. She enjoyed painting outdoors on location and captured the beauty and meaning of the local landscapes she loved so much.
Joyce will be sorely missed by her husband and two daughters, as well as her son-in-law, Felice Scala, and grandson, Giorgio Scala. She is also survived by her siblings George Tanimoto of Porterville, CA; Betty Hishida of Fresno, CA; and Marilyn Oishi of Honolulu, HI. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Gladys Yoshida of Denver, CO and Frank Tanimoto of Sanger, CA.
Buddhist Memorial Service will be held at Lisle Funeral Home in Fresno on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.
