Kevin Joseph Hull, affectionately known as “Ku,” passed away on October 21, 2026, at the age of 73. A devoted husband to Melissa Phillips, beloved brother, uncle, great-uncle, colleague, and friend, Kevin lived a life rich in family, friendship, adventure, and the simple pleasures he loved most.
Born in San Francisco on March 19, 1953, to Kenneth Hull and Dolores Sutherland, Kevin grew up alongside his siblings Elizabeth Hull, Valerie McGrew, and Brian Hull (Dianne). His childhood was filled with treasured family traditions: summers on the Russian River with the Valente family, including George and Rhody; visits to Grass Valley with the Sutherlands; and lively Christmases surrounded by cousins and extended family. These experiences shaped his lifelong love of family and the outdoors.
Kevin attended St. Michael's Elementary School and St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco. A talented athlete, he played football at the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, and ultimately Saint Mary's College of California, where he graduated. During these years, he formed some of the most important relationships of his life, and it was through these friendships that he met his beloved wife Melissa.
A lifelong San Francisco sports fan, Kevin's devotion to the Giants and the 49ers began at age ten, when he would ride the Muni bus to Kezar Park Stadium with free tickets from Christopher Milk. His loyalty to Bay Area sports never wavered, and he enjoyed many years as a San Francisco 49ers season ticket holder.
Kevin had a curious mind and a deep appreciation for history, books, and learning, but knew that life behind a desk was not for him. Encouraged by his friends Bud and Gen Dyer, he became an electrician and went on to build a successful career with Fresno Unified School District, eventually leading a team as Maintenance Service Manager.
Kevin and Melissa made their home in the Fresno-Clovis area, building a wonderful life surrounded by close friends and family, including Rich and Amy Tobin and the extended Tobin and Phillips families.
The mountains held a particularly special place in Kevin's heart. He was happiest on the trails of the Sierra Nevada, exploring a landscape he knew and loved deeply. From the John Muir Trail and Kaiser Wilderness to the rugged beauty of Death Valley, he found joy, peace, and adventure in the outdoors. Hiking was more than a pastime; it was an enduring passion and an essential part of who he was. Kevin also loved to travel, embracing opportunities to explore new places, experience different cultures, and make memories along the way. He was an enthusiastic cyclist, completing century rides and triathlons, and a dedicated rugby player who treasured the camaraderie of his teammates. Many of his closest and most lasting friendships were forged through these shared adventures.
Perhaps nowhere was Kevin's generous spirit more evident than in his relationships with his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He first became an uncle at just thirteen, beginning a role that would remain one of the greatest joys of his life. In retirement, he delighted in caring for and spending time with the younger generation. To them, he was simply Uncle Ku: a constant, loving presence whose kindness, attention, and affection made each of them feel special.
Kevin also took great pride in his Irish heritage, reflecting his deep appreciation for family, tradition, history, and belonging. Above all, Kevin will be remembered for his love for Melissa, his devotion to family, the friendships he nurtured, and the enthusiasm with which he embraced life. He leaves behind countless cherished memories and a legacy of love in the lives of all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 30, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home in Fresno, followed by a reception and celebration of Ku's life at 4:00 p.m. at Classic Catering at Six-Two-Five in Old Town Clovis. In celebration of Ku's lifelong love of sports, guests are warmly invited to wear a favorite sports jersey to the reception.
In keeping with Kevin's wish to help others, his brain has been donated to support research into chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations in his memory to Brain Support Network, in honor of his commitment to advancing research and helping others.
“Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear.”
