After graduating high school from Washington Union High School, he was drafted into the army. Upon his return, he later went to work at UPS for 32 years before his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of 51 years; son Jeff Barkema, daughter-in-law Stephanie and grandson Stephen; daughter Lesli Millard, son-in-law Robert and granddaughter Heidi; sister Janice Silva and brother-in-law Frank.
He is preceded in death by his brother Jim Barkema.
Private graveside service will be held. A celebration of life luncheon will be held at noon on Monday, October 24, 2016 at Pardini's.
