Lois was born to Gervacio and Rosario Mati on September 22, 1932 in Ilocos Sur, Philippines. She married Dr. Paul Laygo in 1951 and moved to the United States in 1960.
Lois was President of the Filipino Women's Club of Fresno and Vicinity, Vice President of the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce, Past President of the Pilipino Political Action Coalition of Central California, past First Lady of the Knights of Columbus Council 840, Lions Club "Mother of the Year" in 1991, and she is considered by many to be the First Lady of the Fil-Am Association of Fresno and Vicinity because of her early and dedicated involvement and her role in securing the Fil-Am building in Fresno, known for civic, social and cultural events.
Lois was an avid gardener and world traveler. With husband Paul she was known to be a gifted matchmaker as attested to by many happy couples. She was thoroughly devoted to her Catholic Faith, her husband, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, her many friends, and the Filipino community. The void she leaves behind will never be filled but her love will continue to grow for generations.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Estrella Parker and her son-in-law Dan O'Brien.
In addition to her husband Paul, Lois is survived by her children, Vickie Veen and her husband John, Lisa O'Brien, Joseph Laygo and his wife Norma, Charles Laygo and his wife Lani, Anthony Laygo and his wife Patty; son-in-law, Henry Parker; her grandchildren, Shawn, Natasha, Henry Jr., Tiffany, Paul Jr., Sarah, Jonathan, Casey, Joey, Megan, Charles Jr., Veronica, Amanda, Brittany, Stacy, Brandon; and ten great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John's Cathedral on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.
