Mary was born in Howard, South Dakota to Edward and Catherine O'Brien on March 2, 1917. She was the second of six children and the only daughter. Mary graduated from Howard High School, and St. Joseph School of Nursing in Mitchell, South Dakota. After graduation she worked at Merchant Marine hospitals in Washington and San Francisco. She was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Nurse Corps during WWII, and returned to California and was stationed at Dibble Army Hospital in Palo Alto, and McCormick General in Pasadena. After the war she moved to Fresno where she worked at Fresno County Hospital, St. Agnes Hospital and The Nazareth House until retirement in 1994.
Mary was an active member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church since its founding.
Mary married Horace Latona in 1948.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Nazareth House, especially Sister Rose and "Queenie".
She was preceded in death by Horace, her loving husband of 47 years and her five brothers.
She is survived by her daughters Cathy Pluta and her husband Steve of Walnut Creek, CA and Dori Tolzmann and her husband Scott of Fresno; and her grandchildren, Claire Pluta, Jess Tolzmann, and Natalie Tolzmann; and many nieces and nephews.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church on Monday, November 7, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
