Matt Hobe was born June 14, 1956, to Carl and Bernice Hobe in the city of Fresno, California, where he would make his lifelong home. He was a belated and beloved addition to the family and never lost the imagination and sweetness characteristic of being the youngest child.
He studied both math and the humanities, ultimately graduating with a major of his own invention. His research spanned practical and esoteric disciplines, reflecting an eclecticism and open-mindedness central to his nature. He always found that his intellectual and spiritual inquiries, however far afield, drew him closer to God and the faith of his upbringing, and he remained a devoted Catholic throughout his life.
After his studies, he focused on family, both helping his father with his business and becoming a parent himself. He poured tireless affection and ingenuity into this role, and when his children were grown, he embarked on business ventures that shared his love of play and make-believe with others.
Matt passed away on September 10th, 2025, survived by his sister and two daughters who will remember him as a devoted, loving father that encouraged their creativity, lifelong learning, and the courage to question the status quo. His family and friends will remember him fondly for his mercurial wit and gentle temperament. He will be dearly missed.
The funeral service and committal will take place on Monday, October 13th, 2025, at Saint Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Fresno, California, where his parents and brother have been laid to rest.
He will also be among those remembered at the Requiem Mass at Saint Ignatius Church in San Francisco on November 2, 2025, at which his son-in-law will sing. The liturgy will be livestreamed for those who wish to attend virtually: https://stignatiussf.org/events/requiem-mass-2025
