Nina Nixon was born September 4, 1911 in a "Dug Out" home on the prairie of southern Colorado. Nina was one of six children born to Almena and Harvey Mechling. Nina passed on September 3, 2010. Nina's life is a reflection of American history from the prairie settlers, the dust bowl, the great depression, the migration to the west and settling in the central valley of California with her beloved husband Paul Nixon.
Paul and Nina created the Paul Nixon Painting Company, which eventually grew to the largest painting company in the central valley by 1960. Following a life of hard work Paul and Nina retired and traveled to over 80 countries and all but one state in the United States. Paul and Nina were married nearly 55 1/2 years. Nina and Paul were strong Christians who tithed and worked closely with their churches. Nina served on numerous boards. Paul and Nina were also interested in youth. Nina formed Girl Scout groups, was a director of Daily Vacation Bible Schools, served on the Christian Education Boards and Missions, taught home Bible classes and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. Nina also served in numerous capacities in the Memorial Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Fresno.
One on the moments our family is most proud of was the opening of the Evangel Home in Fresno. A need existed, as there was no shelter for women and their children at that time. Nina and a group of her friends formed a committee and began work. Paul and his crew of friends remodeled a home and Nina and her friends opened the first home for women and children in Fresno. The Evangel Home has grown and stands today as a Christian home for families in need.
Nina is survived by her daughter, Aleen Sutton; her son, Connor Nixon; her grandchildren, Don, Terry and Steven MacAlpine, Cory and Sean Nixon; her great grandchildren include Luke, Chelsey, Jeremy and Christine MacAlpine, and Adrian Nixon; and great great grandchild, Emery Robbins.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Peoples Church, G.L. Johnson Chapel on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 12:00 noon.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Evangel Home.
