

Philip Eugene Hughes passed away with his family at his bedside after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease on Thursday January 14, 2016 at Saint Agnes Medical Center. He was born an only child on January 27, 1936 in San Francisco, California where he spent his childhood and early adult years. He married Florence Whitson, his high-school sweetheart, in 1959.
Philip served in the United States Navy from 1956-1958 touring the world during a time of peace following the Korean war. After his time in the Navy he completed an apprenticeship at Greyhound where he became a journeyman diesel mechanic. He worked at Hunter’s Point Naval Shipyard as a heavy equipment mechanic and later worked at Mare Island as a Foreman. Philip was promoted to Director of Transportation at Moffett Field Naval Air Station in Mountain View, California where he earned recognition for his outstanding work in his field. He was again promoted to Heavy Equipment Inspector at Western Division Naval Facility in San Bruno, California. This promotion gave him the opportunity to travel all over the country inspecting cranes for the Navy. Among his favorite places to travel were Maine, South Carolina and Washington state. In 1987 Philip and his family relocated to Fresno, California where he was again the Director of Transportation at NAS Lemoore. In 1992, after a 25-year career with the government Philip retired. Immediately following his retirement, he went to work for Saint Agnes Medical Center in security. He served the Saint Agnes community for 10 years before his final retirement in 2002.
Philip was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish, camp and ride motorcycles. He was a member of both the Trails and Wheels Association in the bay area and the 4-Wheel Drive Club of Fresno, Ca. He was active in the 4-H while living in San Bruno, Ca. He served as Beef Leader and volunteered his time helping youth raise cattle for show.
Following retirement Philip volunteered his time with the Madera Sherriff’s Posse where he was active with search and rescue. When he was not volunteering his time he could be found caring for and tending to his yard. He was passionate about his family and loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities.
Philip is preceded in death by his mother Berta Stetson, his father Philip Robert Hughes, and his great grandson Dylan McSherry.
He is survived by his wife Florence Whitson Hughes; His daughters Cindy Schaar and husband Dan, and Heather Carrier and husband Joe; His grandchildren Tony Schaar and wife Jennifer, Stephanie McSherry and husband Travis, Kyle and Kory Borzoni, Mariah, Marlee, and Colby Carrier; great grandchildren Meadow and Amelia Schaar, and Patrick McSherry; step-brother Tim Hughes; and cousin Neil Dunford.
A private family memorial will be held in Philip’s honor.
